Dirty Laundry

For some time now I have been wanting to make my own laundry soap.
Not only is it so much cheaper but if you have sensitive skin this is supposed to be
amazing, plus you can add any smell you want.
There are so many recipes out there that I had to do some research to find out what people
liked best. The one I choose had an overwhelming positive feedback.

Side note:
There is an inside joke with my mom, sisters and I. Anytime one of us makes something delish we offer up the recipes by staying "alls ya do.." Then proceed to explain the recipe. Im not sure why we do it, I don't think one of us has remembered the recipe when the time comes to actually make it. We usually end up calling for the recipe anyway. But no matter we do it anyway because it's fun to share recipes that you love with others. So in conclusion...

Alls ya do...
1 box (4lb 12oz) of Borax
1 box (4lb 12oz) of Arm and Hammer Baking Soda
1 box (3lb 7oz) of Arm and Hammer Washing Soda
3 (5.5oz) Fels Naptha Soap
2 containers (about 3.5 lbs. total) Oxyclean, or store brand (optional)
Garbage bag
Canister
Essential Oils (optional)

  • You can grate the soap with a cheese grater but that seemed like too much work and it leaves large soap pieces that look like cheese. So I put the soap, one at a time, in the microwave for about 2 minutes. It will puff up. (I recommend doing this on a day you aren't going to cook and can open the windows and doors. It is SO strong.) Let cool completely, the longer the better.
  • If you want to add essential oils to your detergent add to baking soda, mix till there are no clumps
  • After soap is cooled it will crumble into a powder like consistency. Mix soap, Borax, washing and baking soda, and Oxyclean in a large garbage bag.
  • Store in canisters.
  • Use 1-2 Tbls per load

Just a few helpful tips:
I found all the ingredients next to each other on the detergent aisle at Walmart (bottom shelf)
The oxyclean comes with 2T. scoops that are perfect for measuring the detergent.
This detergent is front load washer safe.
You can use any bar of soap but Fels-Naptha (or Zote) is recommended.
This detergent is safe to use with bleach and fabric softener.
Works well with both warm and cold water.
This will not suds up, bubbles do not mean clean
This detergent smells good but it isn't very strong. I added oils, fresh linen and lavender.
I spent $26 for everything and according to other blogs this will do 300 loads using 2 Tbls.
If you want to make a smaller batch go here, pretty much the same recipe. But the ingredients come in huge boxes so I just made a large batch and gave some to my mom to use.

When I got done I filled 2 large and 1 medium canister.
